This work has found application as described in the Plymouth impact case study: An Innovative Friction Welding Platform for Creep Damage Assessment and Repair of Thermal Power Plant Components. The techniques outlined in this paper allow a priori prediction of the effectiveness of tool geometry changes on mechanical performance of FS welds. It has formed part of the underpinning of a revolutionary new form of welding, produced significant economic gain, as described in the impact case study and enabled a spin out company to be set up.
