Additional information

<27> A novel joint retrieval algorithm of aerosol optical depth and aerosol type, using MSG/SEVIRI observations in two solar channels, has been developed for land surface at high temporal resolutions of hourly level. It is capable of capturing the aerosol diurnal variation. This new hourly AOD and aerosol type information can be used for air quality and transport studies, such as during periods of sandstorms and volcanic eruptions, to further reduce uncertainties in the current aerosol forcing estimations caused by high temporal variations of aerosol properties. Thereby it plays a role complementary to global aerosol retrievals from polar orbiting satellites.
