Characterization of hollow cathode and parallel plate microplasmas: scaling and breakdown
This paper establishes the first theory of controlled low-temperature plasma operation inside small diameter tubes at high pressure. Existing experimental data is sparse and we have added an extensive and robust dataset, extending our understanding from symmetrical parallel-plate structures to three-dimensions, high pressure (collisional) and microscale dimensions. It feeds into our related work on biomaterials e.g. coronary stents tube coating (dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.diamond.2004.12.023) and ongoing industrial-related research into plasma-based sensors (e.g. our US patent 7,361,514). Part of the underpinning to recent EPSRC funding (EP/K022237/1 and EP/K006088/1).
