Chemical Grafting of Poly(ethylene glycol) Methyl Ether Methacrylate onto Polymer Surfaces by Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Processing
This paper reports for the first time plasma induced chemical grafting of poly(ethylene glycol) onto polymer surfaces using a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) operating at atmospheric pressure in air. The specific conditions necessary to create a PEGMA layer with a “brush” type configuration, as evident by a complete resistance to protein adsorption have been identified. This work originated from the EPSRC Grand Challenge award EPSRC (EP/C534247/1) - “Regenerative Medicine – A New Industry (Remedi)” which was a collaboration between the Universities of Loughborough, Nottingham, Ulster, Cambridge, Birmingham and Liverpool.
