The work presented in the paper has formed the basis for research on rocking foundations, as part of the €2.4M ERC-funded project “DARE” (ERC-2-9-AdG228254-DARE; http://ideas-dare.com). The scope of the project was to investigate the response of soil–foundation–structure systems beyond conventional failure thresholds. The realistic simulation of cyclic foundation response is a prerequisite and the presented work has made it possible to simulate realistically the seismic performance of a variety of foundation-structure systems, such as the frame structure analysed in paper 3.
