Additional information

This article draws on a longitudinal DCSF-funded study. It provides the evidence underpinning the Home Learning Environment (HLE) measure. It demonstrates the contribution of the HLE to the later independent development of demographic and other factors. This evidence has stimulated government-led initiatives to improve the HLE for young children as in the DfE document Supporting Families in the Foundation Years . Data from the article are used in the Field Review, on child poverty (2010) and The Allen Review Early Intervention (2011). It has also inspired Scottish government to fund similar research.
