From natural lotus leaf to highly hard-flexible diamond-like carbon surface with superhydrophobic and good tribological performance
Significance of output:
The materials with superhydrophobic surfaces are normally soft, which limit their applications including tool cutting and Magnetic Storage Devices. The research has employed a novel way to fabricate superhydrophobic films of diamond like carbon, which successfully exhibited good balance of high hardness (approximately 21 GPa) and toughness as well as excellent superhydrophobicity with contact angle up to 160°. The result is expected to have substantial applications. The project was collaborated between two leading tribological institutes in UK and China, funded by the Innovation China-UK (EPSRC) and Royal Society of Sciences.
