Additional information

We have successfully developed a process chain to control mirror segment edge-profiles for the European Extremely Large Telescope project. This relies on a contuinuously=variable size of polishing spot as it encroaches the edge-zone, and has been described as an unprecedented advance. In developing this process, many experiments have been required due to the multiple process parameters to be optimised. The influence function characterizes the removal-profile, and it varies with edge-overlap. In this paper, we have presented a new method for the simulation of influence functions on edges, which will provide quantitative a-priori information to choose process parameters, bypassing the massive job of empirical optimization, and giving a commercially attractive solution
