Double-weighted statement
The book is the product of twelve years of work, including visits to galleries throughout Europe and America, and the use of archive material in this country, Belgium and France. Many of the images are well known but accessing them and gaining permissions for use in an academic volume was complex and time consuming. The book argues a complex thesis which attempts to make a theological reading of secularity through Western art over a five hundred year period.
