Additional information

Many members of the population have an allergic reaction to nickel. This presents a serious problem as nickel is a component of dental alloys. One must be sure that the level of Ni in the alloy is such that the metal is not leached out. This interdisciplinary research study has used a novel physical vapour deposition technique to form a surface coating with concentration of Ni in Ni/Fe dental alloy material varying from 0 – 100 percent. By measuring the amount of nickel released from dental alloys in artificial saliva solution we were able to establish safe levels of nickel.
