25 Digital Landscape
Birth and Decay is the result of research into ways of interactively combining a series of photographic close-ups using interactive technologies, which enable users to navigate through seasonal changes the landscape.
An interrogation of landscape using digital recording and interactive technologies - creating works that critically engage with the representation of the world through digital technologies with the prevalence use of thumbnails. The series uses a grid format (5 by 5) display to create a perceptual field that asks the viewer to perceive these atomized elements as a perceptual whole.
Working with in print and browser based interactive technologies this body of work has been directed toward natural and urban environments with an emphasis on the perceptual mechanisms of gestalt psychology to create visual slices of time (i.e. Gestalt ideas around figure and ground).
The project has featured in exhibitions in the UK, Europe and the USA. In its exhibited form this interactive artwork extensively toured the USA as part of a SIGRAPH tour (2008-9) that went to venues including Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery and was also featured in a number of interactive art exhibitions in Brazil and Portugal ( Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery November 6th 2008 – January 18th 2009 having been at The Niswonger Digital Media Center, East Tennessee State University September 1st to 26th 2008 & University of Wisconsin-Stout, January 29th to February 21st 2008 ).
Prints and interactive elements relating to Birth and Decay were exhibited in a solo show at Dimbola Museum – home of the celebrated Victorian Photographer Julia Margaret Cameron – 7th September to 4th November 2012.
