Additional information

The new sensor-actuator material described in the paper is a world first. The paper addressed several problems with previous electret materials, including that of inconsistency of manufacture in current voided electrets, the problem of scaling earlier electrets across size ranges, and the ability to utilise the new material in complex shapes (unlike the older electret materials). This project was undertaken by an interdisciplinary research team from biology, chemistry and physics (Prof Robert, d.robert@bristol.ac.uk, Bristol University) and engineering (Strathclyde). The material developed in this project underpins an ERC funding application by Strathclyde (No. 615030, Stage 2 decision December 2013).
