Additional information

TiAlBN coatings are produced commercially for cutting tool applications. In this work, TiAlBN coatings have been deposited in an industrial single electron beam evaporation system. The coating nanostructure, phase composition and hardness values are compared to those previously obtained using a dual electron beam evaporation system. The variations in nanostructure and mechanical properties between the coatings deposited on the two systems are explained considering the different deposition rates and hence adatom surface mobilities. The work is particularly important both in improving the fundamental understanding of deposition rate effects on coating structure and properties and for industrial companies producing such coatings.
