Additional information

Laboratory based investigations of the interaction of atmospheric wind flow with the wakes of wind turbines requires adequate simulation of both wind flow and turbines. This paper is a collaborative study with the Université d’Orléans of a simplified (i.e. non-rotating) turbine model in comparison with a rotating (i.e. more complex and expensive) model. The results show a close match in wake statistics, thereby providing a significantly cheaper means for the investigation of wake developments in wind farm arrays, and other investigations, such as the important aspect of wake meandering, under a range of simulated atmospheric wind flow conditions.
