Millenial Masculinity: Conflict and Denial in Contemporary Visual Culture
The author was invited to submit this paper to ‘Russian Fashion Theory’ by its editor following a keynote lecture delivered by the author at the opening of the ‘Dressing Rooms’ International Conference in Oslo in 2007. This international peer-reviewed publication is dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of fashion and views fashion as a cultural phenomenon. It is distinguished by the range of its content, written by leading Western and Russian specialists, as well as classical texts on fashion theory.
Fashion scholars have often ignored the part played by popular cinema, beginning in the 1980s, in revolutionizing male dress and self-presentation, this article locates work on masculinity in cinema began in the author’s earlier essays, but moves beyond a discussion of cinema to argue that the only way to comprehend the complexities of the ‘masculine’ today is through interdisciplinary work. Focusing on the highly problematic and successful Hollywood film ‘300’ (USA Zack Snyder, 2007) it analyses its relation to contemporary visual culture (cinema, advertising, magazines and fashion imagery).
