Additional information

Torrefied biomass has potential to become a major traded fuel for use in large utility boilers for renewable electricity generation. This work, in collaboration with Alstom Power (co-author), Drax, RWE nPower and EON, demonstrates that torrefied biomass could be handled in exisiting equipment, a key strategic factor for converting from coal to biomass. It also presented a way to relate torrefaction parameters to mill performance. Major follow-on projects (EPSRC and TSB) are examining wider implications in storage, handling and combustion. The author was invited to join BSI National Technical committee PTI/17, to provide input concerning standard specification of torrefied biomass.
