Additional information

New phase diagrams for the dynamic structure of clay-laden open-channel flows are proposed, which can be used to distinguish between turbulent Newtonian, transitional, and laminar non-Newtonian flow behaviour on the basis of the balance between turbulent and cohesive forces. The deposits of these flows constitute an important part of the geological record. The rich and comprehensive experimental data presented in the paper aids better understanding of the internal structure and driving mechanisms of these flows thus provide good reference for others. It has received the 2009 Outstanding Paper Award (Honorable Mention) by the Society for Sedimentary Geology.
