Significance of output:

Our report of kW fibre lasers (2002) defined a need for new fibre production techniques capable of depositing large quantities of highly-doped rare-earth materials for their exceptionally large cores. The ORC (1985) solution-doping method is used worldwide, but cheaper mass production techniques are needed to support what has become a $B global industry. The work described has attracted on-going funding from SPI lasers of £0.5M/annum and will be transferred to them. It also contributed to the establishment of an EPSRC Centre for Advanced Manufacturing in Photonics (£5,124,642) and the Association of Laser Users Award for contributions to industrial lasers (DNP).
