The Severed Head and the Grafted Tongue : Translating Violence in Early Modern Ireland

This is a substantial piece of work with chapters on the great Renaissance epic-romances and their translations: Edmund Spenser’s translation of Du Bellay's 1558 Antiquitez de Rome, Sir John Harington’s translation of Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso, and Sir George Carew’s translation of Alonso Ercilla y Zúñiga’s La Araucana –as well as Richard Stanihurst’s translation of Virgil’s Aeneid. It required the collection and analysis of a considerable body of material in six European languages and argues that the colonisation of Ireland in the late c16th had a profound impact on the reception of classical literature and contemporary European epics in c17th England.
