Double-weighted statement

This wide-ranging book is the product of a decade's research. Its large scale is the result of its bringing into relation two extensive projects: demonstrating modernism's systematic engagement with life writing and its taxonomy; establishing an extensive pre-history of such engagements; and articulating a new literary history that connects these two facts. When the manuscript was submitted (longer than the published volume), OUP suggested dividing it into two volumes; but it was decided that the primary purpose of connecting 19th and 20th century texts would have been obscured.
