Animation, Small Multiples, and the Effect of Mental Map Preservation in Dynamic Graphs
<20> This experiment is the first to compare animation to small multiples for dynamic graphs while considering the mental map. Although animation produces fewer errors on appearance tasks, small multiples is often more effective for most tasks. As small multiples is not often used for dynamic graph visualization, it encourages the development of new techniques. The work has been applied to the areas of social networks (Chapter 26, Handbook of Graph Drawing and Visualization, CRC Press, 2013), distributed systems (Sambasivan et al: "Visualizing Request-Flow Comparison to Aid Performance Diagnosis in Distributed Systems", InfoVis 2013), and many other areas.
