Additional information

The investigation, supported by the Office for National Statistics, uses spatially-structured data and a recently introduced 'Rural and Urban Area Classification' scheme to unmask the extent of rural deprivation unseen in previous studies. While the mathematical techniques applied in this paper (namely the organisation of mortality registration data, and the building of regression models that incorporate demographic and deprivation adjustments) are fundamental to the investigation, the context of the results, being so deeply embedded in the literature of rural/urban mortality, and the significance for public health policy, support a cross-referral to A2: Public Health, Health Services and Primary Care.
