Additional information

This work, which was supported by grants from the EPSRC, NSF (US) and Schneider Electric (France), was the first to quantify experimentally how water could collect around nano-particles in epoxy resin insulation and the consequent requirement for chemical functionalisation of the surface of the particles. This important conclusion has led to changes in the development of such ‘nanodielectrics.’ The work led to interest from Nexans (France), a major power cable manufacturer, and their subsequent support for a PhD studentship.
