This 130,000 word book represents the result of research conducted in archives and libraries in Russia, the UK and the US to reveal for the first time in any language the crucial role of traditional Russian elites in the revolutionary process. There is no single body of source material; instead, Rendle utilised a range of unstudied and understudied archives, involving numerous hours sifting through official and personal records for relevant information (often in less-than-ideal conditions in Russian archives). He also undertook widespread reading across national and local newspapers, and amongst memoirs and other published sources.
