DESCRIPTION

A devised performance and installation extending Jones’s exploration of collaborative devising practices across media and skill-sets, focusing on the relationship between the still image (photography) and live performance, whilst continuing to develop insights into collaboration between music composition and performance.

Jones’s contribution: conceived and co-directed performances, co-conceived and co-directed installations, authored or found and prepared texts and lyrics, conceived and consulted on documentation. [See portfolio for credits.]

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1. how can photography as medium and practice be integrated into the devising process?

2. how might the materiality of print photography and digital photography, and their related technologies, be explored in performance and mixed-media installation?

3. what does this encounter between performer and photographic image tell us about the encounter and use of technologies in general in performance?

4. how might this encounter be used to explore the impact of digital and mobile technologies and social media on contemporary constructions of self?

APPROACHES AND CONTEXT

Multi-media performance practices have tended to focus on the moving image, particularly video and online streaming. By integrating a photographer in the collaborative process from the outset, Jones developed a comparatively under-explored aspect of multi-media practice. [See papers for descriptions of process.] From these workshops and performances, Jones developed insights into the use of visual technologies in performance, and from that a theoretical description of performance as inbetween-ness sine qua non. [See papers.] The project’s manifestations through performance and installation emerged out of the process, the latter in order to explore better question 2. The lecture and double-bill presentation with Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape was conceived as a comparative exercise between play-based theatre and devised performance, to explore better questions 3 and 4.

DISSEMINATION

Through performances at key venues; papers at conferences and symposia; DVD documentation detailing the various manifestations. [See portfolio for details.]
