The distinctive contribution of each of the two authors can most easily be identified on geographical lines. Esmonde Cleary was responsible for content relating to Spain, Gaul , Germany and Britain. Sears was responsible for content relating to North Africa. This division also feeds through into the synthetic discussions bearing on these geographical areas and on the varying types of evidence from them. Both authors contributed equally to the discussions framing the work and the ideas underpinning sections of the book written by the third author, and to agreeing the final text.
