CIRCA (Computer Interactive Reminiscence and Conversation Aid)
CIRCA (Computer Interactive Reminiscence & Conversation Aid) is a computer-based interactive system that helps people with age-related dementia to have easier and more equitable communication with carers and relatives. The system is the result of a multidisciplinary project combining expertise in the fields of design, computer science and psychology.
The CIRCA system combines archive photographs, video and music in a software programme that delivers easy-access and ‘fail-safe’ reminiscence therapy and communication support through a touch-screen interface. The team liaised with national media groups including BBC, ITN Source, The Mirror Group, Pathe etc in the acquisition of appropriate reminiscence media content for the system. Originally conceived and developed through a 3 year EPSRC funded programme of research, the system was launched as a product in 2010 and represents the first commercially available computer-driven ‘cognitive prosthesis’ specifically designed to assist people living with dementia. The research team includes members from the School of Computing and the University of St Andrews. The team adopted a human-centred approach to the design process, conducting extensive user-testing in care institutions throughout the UK and worked with various bodies including Alzheimers Scotland, Action on Dementia, Alzheimer Society (UK) and local government departments.
