Computational wear prediction of artificial knee joints based on a new wear law and formulation
The new wear law developed recently with support through EPSRC Portfolio grant GR/S63892/01 has been applied for the first time for computational wear prediction in artificial knee joints in collaboration with DePuy and published in the top journal in Bioengineering. The computational prediction has confirmed importance of optimizing contact area and provided design guidance for future developments of artificial knee joints. The model is currently used extensively in collaboration with DePuy to underpin an industry funded experimental simulation programme on lower wearing prostheses (industry Hardaker, chardake@its.jnj.com), and to underpin collaborative work with Simulation Solutions on advanced knee simulators (Eldred, nick.eldred@simsol.co.uk).
