German cities and bourgeois modernism, 1890-1924
'German Cities' is a substantive, research-based monograph, which reflects work conducted in a wide range of archives and specialist libraries, in three different countries, over a period of approximately nine years. This was made possible by multiple grants (AHRB, Leverhulme) and visiting fellowships (including two stints at the Center for European Studies, Harvard). Several of its chapters constitute small research projects in their own right, each employing distinct bodies of sources and methodologies for de-coding them, and on this basis intervening in historiographical debates as diverse as political history, art history, environmental history and the history of emotions.
