Real-time experimental demonstration of low-cost VCSEL intensity-modulated 11.25Gb/s optical OFDM signal transmission over 25km PON systems
This work, demonstrating the feasibility of utilising directly-modulated VCSELs in OOFDM transceivers, has been extended by us to include an analytical study of propagation effects (in collaboration with UP Valencia, Opt Exp 21, 7651, 2013). Other groups have subsequently explored: sub-cycle QAM signal transmission using directly modulated VCSELs (Tech Univ Denmark, Opt Exp 21, 1830, 2013) and 16-QAM-OFDM using directly-modulated Fabry-Perot laser diodes (National Taiwan Univ, JLT 31, 1079, 2013). The use of VCSELs offers an opportunity for cost-effective and environmentally-friendly mass deployment of OOFDM in access networks.
