The author chaired the CERN committee which determined that the only experiment at the LHC specifically designed to study heavy flavour physics would involve a single experiment of beauty production using colliding beams and a flexible triggering system. The author also took a major responsibility in the basic design of what subsequently became the LHCb experiment. Thus the author’s scientific contribution to this, the first paper produced by the collaboration, was fundamental.
