Harold Pinter: The Theatre of Power
In elaborating a phenomenological approach to the stage plays I initially needed to examine the relationship of written to performance texts by viewing all premier theatre productions and London revivals between 1975 and 2009, and television or film versions since 1963 – altogether 81. Practical experiments in identifying staging ‘instructions’ implicit in written texts were undertaken through productions of Night and Family Voices (Pinter Symposium, Miami, 1995); Party Time and Monologue (world stage premières, Pinter at 70, Ohio, 2000); The Dumb Waiter, Mountain Language, Victoria Station, The Lover, Ashes to Ashes (Pinter Festival, Colby College, Maine, 2001); Press Conference (world première, Goldsmiths, 2002).
