A light scattering model for layered dielectrics with rough surface boundaries
<23>Paper derives new model for light scattering from rough layered surfaces, examples of which include skin and the leafs. Captures surface roughness using the Backmann wave-scatter theory, and models the refraction of light within the layers of the surface using the Fresnel theory. The model provides much better fits to the available reflectance data over both different roughness scales and different scattering angles, outperforming the Oren-Nayar, Vernold-Harvey and Lafortune models. The method is having impact on both the applied-optics and graphics communities in terms of the way in which reflectance models are developed. Cited in a recent dermatological standards document.
