Double-weighted statement

This monograph explores the historically-specific context of a wide range of Conrad’s writing and the range of knowledges embedded in these texts. The research involved the collection and analysis of a considerable amount of material across a range of disciplines and a lengthy period acquiring expertise in diverse areas: South-East Asian trading history; Belgian activities in the Congo; anarchists and the policing of London; late-Victorian immigration debates; late-Victorian banking and financial history; late-Victorian psychological medicine and the impact of World War 1 on the theorising of hysteria; and World War 1 naval history (with particular reference to submarine warfare).
