Significance of output:

Early stages of fatigue initiation and growth control the safe lifetime of turbine discs (a disc burst is a critical failure in an aeroengine, and may take out a plane). This work (funded by QinetiQ, ORS and UoS: £50k) has been of particular interest to Rolls Royce and Pang (the co-author, originally a PhD student at UoS) now works in the Cambridge Rolls Royce Materials UTC as senior research fellow.
