Significance of output:

The system described in this paper ensures that the engine of a series hybrid vehicle operates in the vicinity of its maximum fuel efficiency region while protecting the battery, thus saving fuel and reducing harmful emissions. The results of the work were fed directly into the development of hybrid electric vehicles in China (contact Professor Zhang, mrzhchn@bit.edu.cn and Dr Siguang Li, siguangli@126.com). Reap Systems Ltd, which produces battery management systems, has also expressed an interest in exploiting the techniques in their products - contact Dr D. Doerffel, dennis@reapsystem.co.uk.
