Significance of output:

We show, for the first time, that it is possible to control the direction of the jets formed from collapsing cavitation bubbles using acoustic radiation forces. This has profound implications in many applications as it offers both a way of enhancing our ability to localise the intense temperatures and pressures created by collapsing bubbles, and also the potential to minimise surface damage by driving jets away from surfaces. The high precision experiments image the evolution of bubbles after their initial seeding, and clearly show the effect of the acoustic radiation forces we predict by numerical modelling.
