Significance of output:

Reliable transport of educts and products to and from the electrodes of a Polymer-Electrolyte Fuel Cell (PEFC) is crucial to comply with power density requirements set by the US Department of Energy (DOE). Gas diffusion layers are central to this aspect of the technology. Progress was hampered by a lack of transport data for these materials by slow and delicate measurement techniques. This paper presents a novel, cost-effective method to obtain diffusion coefficients in minutes rather than hours. It will find application in building a database of transport properties to underpin modeling and design of next generation PEFCs.
