Some Reflections
_Some Reflections_ is a 24 minute interdisciplinary, site-responsive, promenade performance piece devised and directed by Hannah Bruce and Sam Lawrence specifically for the National Trust property Max Gate (home of Thomas and Emma Hardy). It is driven by a continuous soundtrack composed and designed by Jonathan Eato, and is delivered via the TlotT App. The script is by Matthew Morrison and Emma Hardy.
This project is part of an approach to heritage interpretation using performance, developed by a partnership between the creative team (Hannah Bruce, Sam Lawrence, Jonathan Eato and Matthew Morrison) the National Trust, and Bath Spa University. It is also designed to inform Max Gate’s involvement in a longer-term research project regarding the meanings of literary house museums led by Professor John Strachan of Bath Spa University and Dr Angelique Richardson of the University of Exeter.
_Some Reflections_ focuses on the idea of memory, considers various (contested) narratives concerning Emma Hardy’s presence at Max Gate. It received three public performances at Max Gate, Dorchester, on 31 May 2013, and a five minute extract of the work was prepared for Helen Mann (National Trust) following her request to present the project at a meeting of National Trust regional managers.
One of the research aims of the piece was to further develop strategies for ‘creative guiding’ in promenade performance pieces, as this was identified as a key issue in work on _The Look of the Thing_. The challenge was lessen the reliance on literal instructions and explore options afforded by creative text working with sound design.
All audio is mastered exclusively for headphone listening. To experience one of the soundtracks via TlotT:
