Algebraic Techniques in Differential Cryptanalysis
<18>This paper, presented at FSE 2009 – the premier annual academic conference on symmetric cryptography - introduced a novel cryptanalytic technique, by combining algebraic and statistical techniques to improve key-recovery cryptanalysis of block ciphers. It contained what was at the time the best cryptanalysis of round-reduced PRESENT-128 block cipher and it has been considered the most promising application of algebraic attacks against block ciphers. The work demonstrated both the potential as well as limitations of algebraic attacks against block ciphers, an area of much research interest and speculation since the standardisation of the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).
