This paper relates to a growing research area of improvement in indoor wireless communications by modification of the building structure and its materials (contact: CIBSE Intelligent Buildings Group Chair; contact details available). Originally funded by EPSRC under grant no EP/E021409/1 , this work allowed the University of Manchester to establish a research reputation in the area (contact University of Kent, contact details available) and become a founder member of the industry-wide Wireless Friendly Building Forum (www.wfbf.org.uk). This work also led directly to an EPSRC funded KTA Industrial Fellowship Award with consulting engineers Buro Happold Ltd (contact details available).
