This output reconceptualizes the theory of phrase structure in a foundational way, and involved the development of an explicit theoretical system embodying a complex set of ideas that were tested meticulously for theoretical consistency as well as for their empirical ramifications. The theoretical work was contingent on the analysis of a series of new empirical findings the collection of which involved an extensive period of fieldwork distributed over a number of years. The work was planned as two separate pieces but was published as a single piece as the connections between the theoretical and empirical work were deeper than expected.
