This paper is the first study of fatigue-oxidation interaction for a new nickel-based disc alloy used in the latest Rolls-Royce aeroengines. The results revealed for the first time the oxidation mechanism under selected variable stresses and temperatures. The measured oxidation damage was utilised to calibrate the essential parameters for an oxygen diffusion model. The crack growth was then modelled using the finite element method and compared satisfactorily with the experimental results. The work won a Young Author's prize at the European Corrosion Congress 2010 (Moscow, 13~17 September 2010).
