Mais qui était ‘Le compositeur du Péchrev dans le makam Nihavend’
In homage to Rauf Yekta Bey’s first publication in French, the Ottoman composition it proudly presents to the Western gaze is reexamined both in relation to its various historical manifestations and different attributions through a text-critical survey of sources that relocates the putative early 18th-century original as a 19th-century document and also identifies for it a strikingly different 17th-century antecedent, with consequent implications for our understanding of stylistic change, and in relation to the ideological context within which various attributions were proposed and the piece subsequently selected as representative of a classical tradition increasingly in need of documentation and defense.
