Additional information

Atkinson is recognised internationally in semi-solid processing through visiting professorships (France, China), an honorary degree (Belgium), the Lee Hsun Award from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shenyang, and 4 plenaries in the REF period. This paper is part of the body of work which has led to these honours. 7075 is a widely used high strength aluminium alloy. We identify a new mechanism of recrystallisation as the alloy is heated into the semi-solid state. The paper is widely taken-up because it provides a framework for scientific understanding. It reinforces the need industrially to avoid local liquid formation during solutionising.
