Memorability of pre-designed and user-defined gesture sets
<20>CHI is a top conference in HCI (acceptance rate: 20%). The paper provides a qualitative analysis of gesture memorability and an empirical understanding of the memorability of gestures in three experiments. Gestures designed by the users for themselves were easier to remember, more fun, and required less effort than gestures designed for them. Previous work on gesture design has focused on designing or eliciting pre-designed gestures that users would need to learn. This paper provides evidence for advantages in allowing users to instead design their own gestures. The paper was featured in MIT Technology Review and Fast Company’s Co.Design.
