Coupled adaptive complex networks
<27>Published in the main journal for complex systems research, this very timely research models complex networks whose topologies adapt over time, something that is key to understanding the behaviour of critical infrastructures under strain. The paper develops an analytical model based on a set of non-linear differential equations, validating it using computationally challenging numerical simulation of large networks. It discovers a new equilibrium in the dynamics of adaptive networks -- an equilibrium masked by commonly-used numerical optimisations -- and thereby shows that higher-order network features can have dramatic macroscopic effects on process behaviours, allowing behaviours to persist unexpectedly.
