<06>This IEEE AINA 2010 (acceptance rate: 25%) paper presents one of the first solutions to the problem of optimising the cost of transferring data to and from cloud edge servers; this is especially important when executing data-intensive applications in the cloud. This paper presents a completely new and novel approach by formulating a non-linear programming model to minimise the data retrieval, and execution costs of data-intensive workflows in the cloud. Our approach results in an average saving of three-quarters the total cost when compared to Amazon CloudFront’s ‘nearest’ single data source selection algorithm.
