Additional information

Maskrey’s practice-led research into how hot glass can be used to reconsider historical narratives was developed in this work exploring the discoveries of Charles Darwin. This series of works use themes of preservation and diet and are made to evoke thought and humour. They use a combination of free-blown glass and lampworked detail and paper labels, an uncommon mix and unsual approach in the hot glass discipline.

Taking inspiration from Darwin’s publications ‘The Voyage of the Beagle’ and ‘Origin of Species', Maskrey created The Natural Selection, consisting of three blown glass works.

The Natural Selection was originally shown as part of ‘Recollect’ at the Koukan Gallery, London (February 2009). Part of the series was later shown at ‘Chase’ at the Royal College of Art (November 2009) and at Glass North East, an exhibition at the Houses of Parliament (February 2010). Two pieces were acquired for the Manchester Metropolitan University special collection which have since been shown in ‘The Glass Journey’ at MMU, Manchester (August - December 2011).
