Visualization of parameter space for image analysis.
<20>This work solves a major bottleneck in image processing: parameter optimisation by trial-and-error. Through direct data interaction and visualization it addresses this well-studied problem with a novel strategy. Growing citations outside computer science indicates acceptance by the biomedical field (ImmunolCellBiol, doi:10.1038/icb.2012.49; NatBiotechnol, doi:10.1038/nbt.2404). The work has led to sustained collaboration with the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. This partnership and the application of visual analytics to hard biomedical problems underpinned Pretorius’s successful application for a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship (ECF2012-071). Routes to bring the developed software to market are being investigated.
